You might have noticed the use of Japanese kintsugi cracks and the term Beautifully Broken throughout our website. Japanese Kintsugi is a centuries-old practice of repairing broken ceramics with gold lacquer. And it’s also a beautiful metaphor for our own internal work!

At Smyrna Couples Counseling, we believe that rather than trying to hide your trauma or pain, imperfections highlight your healing and recovery. The imperfections are what make you & your relationships more beautiful and valuable. The imperfections are what make you beautifully broken! This symbolic metaphor means that when we heal a “broken” part of ourselves, the imperfections (gold cracks) that remain have more of a story, are more authentic, real, stronger and more resilient than someone that has not done this internal work. The breaking of what once was, the layered and time-consuming process of putting it back together, the mending it with gold, all contribute to your value!

Jena and I have worked on a wide range of things; she has helped me understand how my traumas impact my responses to certain situations, has taught me skills to help me manage complicated relationships with family members, and has even aided me in some self-discovery to uncover my interests professionally. Since working with Jena, I have such a better understanding of myself and I have the tools I need to help myself when I feel dysregulated.”

Couples Therapy

Couples often come in for counseling at a point where they believe their relationship is beyond repair. Communication has broken down, they lack trust, and intimacy (i.e., emotional, sexual) no longer exists. Giving yourselves a chance to address this in therapy increases your chance of resolution.
